If your plan is to find less known tourist place in the east coast of Mauritius island, then visit Pointe d’Esny beach. This quiet beach located in Grand Port district is really secluded and difficult to find, that’s why you’ll not see crowds of tourists there.

There are no signs along the coastal road telling you how to go there. But if you’re ready to apply some effort and looking for cool place to hide from hustles and bustles, take some food and water, don’t forget about sunscreen and visit this hidden gem.

Pointe d’Esny beach general information

Once it was not so well known beach and hidden from curious tourists. It was even physically rather difficult to access, to do this you have to know which way to follow.

Nowadays, the situation has changed and this beach in the west coast is the destination point for locals and tourists, looking for some privacy. Village where Pointe d’Esny beach is located was named after engineer and geographer Claude d’Esny. 

Near the beach borders at the north there might be a lot of rocks. Not far from there, there is a yacht club.

It is located in the south east of Mauritius island. Don’t expect too much from the beach in terms of facilities.

There are no showers or restrooms, stalls with food and souvenirs, as well as sun loungers. So, if you’re planning to spend several hours on this beach, make sure you’ve taken all necessary staff with you.

How to get there 

It can be a real quest to find this beach, but you can be sure it’s really worth it. It is located 2 km to the east from the more popular beach – Blue Bay.

If you’re staying in Mahebourg village, it will take less than 10 minutes to drive to the south. There is only one road that can take you to the beautiful lagoon, otherwise you have to go through private property, which is not the best option.

The coastal road is very narrow, about 2 meters wide. Follow the path surrounded from both sides by properties for 150 meters and you will reach the place. 

Things to do and nearby attractions

Swimming

The water in Pointe d’Esny beach is clean and shallow. It is pretty long beach, about one-kilometer. White sand is very soft and fine. What else do you need for a perfect beach vacation in Mauritius

Snorkeling

Turquoise lagoon is great not only for swimming, but also for snorkeling. Don’t miss a chance to check the abundance of marine life in this part of the island.

The only issue is that there are no shops, stalls or other places nearby where you can rent equipment for this activity. But, if you would like to do snorkeling in Pointe d’Esny beach, prepare everything in advance.

Kitesurfing

You can also enjoy kitesurfing here. This is one of the kite spots in Mauritius where many international competitions take place here every year, for example, Hydrofoil Pro Tour.

Visit Blue Bay Park

Visit one of two nature parks located close to the place. You can go to Blue Bay marine park, which is 3km away to the west. It is famous for its variety of corals and abundance of fish and other marine creatures. Desire to witness marine life made this place super popular and Blue Bay beach has become one of the popular beaches in the southern part of the island.

Ile aux Aigrettes

Another option is to visit Ile aux Aigrettes, a small separate island located not so far from Mauritius. It has a status of a nature reserve, with the main goal to save endemic flora and fauna.

It is also a good spot where you can find famous pink pigeons. You can visit this island only by joining the group eco-tour.  

Visit Pointe Jerome

Just opposite to the nature reserve there is a place where you’ll find a lot of catamarans and boats. It’s easy to join the boat tour there and visit any part of Mauritius island, all you need just to agree on price. You can visit Ile des Deux Cocos or join catamaran trip to Ile aux Cerfs.

Best Time to Visit

You can discover Mauritius all year round. But if you would like to enjoy fully the nice weather it’s better to go to the south east of the island from May till November, while January and February are considered as the hottest but the rainiest at the same time.
