The Beach Location and How to Get There
Bo Phut beach is located in the northern part of Koh Samui island. The sandy coastline stretches approximately 2 kilometers along a scenic bay, which is divided into western and eastern parts. To the west, Bo Phut borders Mae Nam Beach, while to the east, it meets the beach known as “Big Buddha” or “Bang Rak.”
On the Mae Nam Beach side, Bo Phut ends near the luxurious five-star hotel, W Koh Samui, and on the opposite side, it reaches an uninhabited cape, where The Deck Beach Club is tucked away. Roughly in the middle is the Fisherman’s Village.
Bo Phut Beach is just a five-minute drive from the airport, with taxi fares ranging from 200 to 300 baht. When booking a hotel, you can inquire about additional transfer services from the hotel for an extra fee.
If you’re exploring the island and its beaches, you can easily reach Bo Phut from any part of Samui by public transport. Since the island is relatively small, traveling from one end to the other won’t be tiring, and the cost of the ride will be no more than 100 baht.
Is Swimming Safe at Bo Phut Beach?
Bo Phut Beach is not one of the most touristy beaches on the island, which contributes to its peaceful and relaxed atmosphere. The gentle incline of the beach makes it a comfortable spot for swimming, especially for families with children.
That being said, caution is advised when entering the water, as there are areas with corals and rocks. The water at Bo Phut Beach is not always perfectly clear, particularly during the rainy season in the fall and winter. However, the western part of the beach remains suitable for swimming. The depth increases gradually, and in some areas, it’s deeper than an adult’s height even 10-15 meters from the shore.
The sand is relatively coarse with an amber-yellow hue, while the seabed is muddy in most areas, becoming more noticeable during the summer. A clearer seabed can be found near the Pico Samui hotel, which is located closer to Mae Nam Beach.
Bo Phut is known for its calm waters, with no strong currents, making it one of the more tranquil beaches on Koh Samui. Still, it’s a good idea to check with local lifeguards before swimming to ensure safe conditions.
Hotels at Bo Phut Beach
There are plenty of accommodation options on and around Bo Phut Beach, ranging from luxurious five-star resorts to cozy boutique hotels. Below are a few choices that might catch your attention:
- Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort – A 5-star hotel offering everything you need for a quality stay. The hotel has its own private beach, and its restaurants serve both Thai and international cuisine. This hotel receives excellent reviews, with room rates starting from $260 per night.
- Karma Resort – A 4-star hotel ideal for family vacations. It features both an indoor and an outdoor pool, as well as spa services. Rooms are rarely available, so early booking is recommended. Room rates start from $400.
- Holiday Inn Resort – A 4-star hotel located right in the heart of Bo Phut Beach, though not directly on the beachfront. It offers cozy rooms, all necessary amenities, and reasonable room rates starting at $170.
Another beachfront hotel is Hansar Samui Resort & Spa, a 5-star hotel situated near Fisherman’s Village. Room rates here start at $130.
Entertainment and Infrastructure at Bo Phut Beach
The western part of Bo Phut Beach on Koh Samui is a bustling tourist hotspot, known for its upscale hotels with private beachfront areas. Here, bright inflatable pillows, mattresses, sunbeds, and umbrellas are set up for resort guests.
You can also seek shade under the sprawling palm trees. Right on the beach, under bamboo and palm leaf pavilions, visitors can enjoy traditional Thai massages. The further west you go, the more shaded spots you’ll find.
The eastern part of Bo Phut Beach is quieter, with fewer visitors. The water here is shallow and murky, and the sand is mixed with coral fragments and scattered rocks. There is no one maintaining the cleanliness of this area.
For entertainment, you can try a banana boat ride, jet skiing, rent a kayak, or get a mask and snorkel to explore the underwater world.
Fisherman’s Village at Bo Phut
Fisherman’s Village is the main attraction at Bo Phut Beach. Once a fishing village, it still retains some of its stilt houses. Today, it has transformed into a popular tourist destination with numerous cafes, restaurants, bars, and shops, though prices here tend to be slightly higher than in other areas.
The best time to visit is on Friday evening, when the night market opens, offering a unique atmosphere. This is one of the most popular markets on Koh Samui. During this time, some of the surrounding streets become pedestrian-only. You can try a variety of Thai delicacies and street food, purchase souvenirs, jewelry, or clothing.

Bo Phut Pier
Next to Fisherman’s Village, there is a pier. While it’s no longer used for boat or ferry departures, it still attracts tourists staying nearby. In the past, boats departed from here to nearby islands, but today, most of them dock at Bang Rak Pier or Nathon Pier. Many visitors come here to enjoy the sunset, taking a leisurely stroll along the promenade or the pier.
