If you dream of seeing Samui from a different perspective – without the crowds of tourists and endless bars – head to Lipa Noi Beach. There are no loud parties here, just a long stretch of soft sand and warm, clear water. It may not be the most popular beach on Samui, but it’s a favorite for families and travelers seeking peace and quiet. In the evenings, many visitors come here to watch the beautiful sunsets.
We’ve put together a detailed guide to Lipa Noi Beach in Samui. In this article, you’ll learn where the beach is located and how to get there, which hotels and accommodations are nearby, whether the beach is safe for swimming, how far the shops and markets are, what attractions are in the area, and where the ferries and boats departing from Lipa Noi Pier go.

Where Lipa Noi Beach Is Located and How to Get There
Lipa Noi Beach is situated on the western coast of Koh Samui in Thailand. To the north lies the town of Nathon, the administrative center of the island, and to the south, on the headland, there is a naval base with a checkpoint, barrier gate, and armed security. The beach itself extends for another kilometer beyond the base. In total, the shoreline stretches for about 4.5 kilometers.
Lipa Noi Beach is roughly a 30-minute drive from the airport. Simply follow the marker on the map to reach it. You can take a songthaew – the most popular form of public transport on Samui – or book an island transfer. Check the current per-person fare and route using the link provided.

About Lipa Noi Beach
Lipa Noi Beach isn’t very wide – the sandy strip is only about five meters across. During low tide, the sea retreats another 5–7 meters in the central part of the beach, while the northern and southern areas become exposed even more noticeably.
The sand varies from place to place: in some areas it’s fine and white, elsewhere it’s more yellow and coarse, and in some spots you’ll see specks of black sand and bits of shell. The shoreline is beautifully framed by sprawling palm trees as well as coniferous and leafy trees. However, their shade only lasts until midday – the rest of the time, right up until sunset, the entire beach is in full sun.

All sections of the main part of Lipa Noi Beach that belong to hotels are kept perfectly clean. In the northern area, sea debris is cleared less frequently, while in the south, closer to the military base, there is noticeably more litter.
The beach beyond the military base is almost deserted, even during Samui’s high season. The sand here is mostly fine and white, and swings hang from the trees right by the water. There are a few hotels in this area, but they mainly operate during the high season on Koh Samui. At other times of the year, the beach is nearly empty and the area is barely maintained.

Is Lipa Noi Beach Good for Swimming?
If you want to swim, head to the central part of Lipa Noi Beach. The entry into the water is very gradual – you’ll need to walk about 100 meters to reach a depth suitable for swimming or diving, and during low tide this distance increases by another 50 meters.
At times of strong high tides, the water can reach almost all the way to the palm grove and the hotels, leaving only a narrow strip of sand for visitors. The water is generally murky throughout the beach, except in the central area where it tends to be clearer. Near the beach there are many popular Koh Samui Instagram spots.
In the northern and southern parts of Lipa Noi Beach, the sea is shallow almost everywhere. The seabed is sandy with a light layer of silt, and stones are hidden beneath the sand. If you’re visiting Koh Samui with children, you’ll have a hard time finding a safer place for them to splash and play.
