Curepipe city is located almost in the center of Mauritius island. It doesn’t have access to the ocean, so the climate is a bit cooler there. This city is not a tourist hub, but if you would like to discover it, there are plenty of things to do and visit. It’s one of the largest cities in the country with nearly 80000 people living there.

Curepipe city is also known as the city of light or La Ville Lumiere. The city is surrounded by greenery and it has an atmosphere of serenity and tranquility. It is located 40 km from Le Morne, 46 km from Grand Baie, 25 km from the capital of the island – Port Louis.

What to see and do 

Trou aux Cerfs 

Located right at the center of Curepipe city, Trou aux Cerfs is a dormant volcano. This place attracts many tourists, because it’s really unique and there are not so many other places in the world where you can go down to the bottom of a volcano. You should visit it for fascinating panoramic views of Curepipe city, such mountain ranges like Trois Mamelles.

Crater diameter is about 350 meters and its depth is about 80 meters. At the bottom there is a small lake, if you have enough time and desire you can have a closer look at it. But be very careful while going down, as the slopes are very muddy and steep.

Churches: St. Theresa’s and St. Helena 

Make sure to visit two churches that are architectural decorations of the city. St. Theresa church is a Catholic church that was built in 1868. It is located in the center of Curepipe. Since the construction of the church, it has been upgraded several times. Nowadays, service takes place every Saturday and Sunday. 

St. Helena’s Church is located in the north of the city. It is “younger” compared to St. Theresa’s and was opened to the public in 1922.

Monvert Nature Walk

This park occupies the territory of 73 hectares and it’s a place where some endemic plants species of plants. Being an arboretum, Monvert Nature park allows people to explore Mauritius flora by walking around the park.

There are many trails you can choose from and you’ll meet a lot of ferns on your way. So, those who like hiking will be happy. There are signs along the path, so you’ll not get lost. Make sure to apply enough sunscreen and take water with you, as the paths run through open areas.

Curepipe Botanical Garden 

This is the second largest garden in Mauritius island, the first one is famous Pamplemousses. Rains are a common thing in this area, so it’s not surprising that the greenery here is very lush. Garden was created by French settlers in 1870 and occupies the territory of 2 hectares.

It’s a place where you can find rare wood species from Mascarene islands, the most popular among them is palm tree. You can meet locals, who prefer to walk around. 

Domaine Des Aubineaux

One more reminder about Mauritius colonial past is Domaine des Aubineaux. This house belonging to an aristocratic family was built in 1872. Teak wood was used for its construction. 

When the island gained its independence, this beautiful mansion was transformed into a museum devoted to Mauritius tea. Nowadays, together with the museum, there is a restaurant.

It would seem, why should this shop be included in your must-visit places? It’s one of the oldest shops on Mauritius island. It’s a place where you can find something unique, if you’re looking to take some rare goods with you make sure to visit this place. Piece of arts, silk woven crafts and many others are presented there. This shop is a family-owned business.

Carnegie Library

This library is located in the center of Curepipe city and is open to the public 7 days a week. There you can find books, letters and other printed materials written several centuries ago. All materials are presented in French and English languages. This place is famous around the globe for many letters that were written by historically important figures.

Voiliers De L’Océan

If you’re looking for a special gift from Mauritius, make sure to visit this craft shop. Craftsmen manually create models of famous ships which are later bought by collectors from many countries. To finish one model it requires a specialist to spend a lot of hours. As you can guess the price for such a miniature ship version will be really high.
